
Maya Buckhanon, Jamal Gibson Join Black College Experience for Interview
NEW ORLEANS (February 12, 2024) -- Black College Experience, a sports podcast that brings positive exposure to HBCU athletics, will feature Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standouts and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Basketball Players of the Week Maya Buckhanon (Fisk University) and Jamal Gibson (Southern University at New Orleans). The interview, which takes place on Tuesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. CST, will broadcast live on the Black College Experience YouTube channel.
Black College Experience Founder Keisha J Kelley is a 2003 graduate of Southern University A&M College and a 2019 graduate of the University of Phoenix, where she obtained a Master of Business Administration. She founded BCE in 2016 because of the lack of positive news media or coverage HBCUs receive. Black College Experience's mission is to bring exposure to Historically Black Colleges and Universities athletics. Through media exposure, including radio, social media, and video streaming, Black College Experience also raises funds to award scholarships to students currently enrolled or planning to attend HBCUs.
The interview will focus on Buckhanon and Gibson being named NAIA Player of the Week and their phenomenal seasons, each at the top of the nation in rebounding. Buckhanon has been named GCAC Player of the Week six times this year and Gibson recently picked up Player of the Week honors for the ninth time this season. While Buckhanon and Gibson are two of the most humble individuals one could meet, their confidence on the court that is unmatched - and frustrating for their opponents.
Buckhanon, a native of Talladega, Ala., has amassed 947 points and 701 rebounds in two years with the Lady Bulldogs. This year alone, Buckhanon has clocked 19 double-doubles in 20 games played, scoring 447 total points and grabbing 296 rebounds so far this year. The 2022-23 NAIA All-American is the first player from Fisk to pick up NAIA Player of the Week since 2014 when Cam Lewis was honored.
Gibson has made history at SUNO, becoming the first player to score 500 points and grab 400 rebounds in his freshman season. The New Orleans native has 25 double-doubles in 26 games and leads the nation in every rebounding category. He has set the program record for rebounds in a single season and became the first player from SUNO to be named NAIA Basketball Player of the Week.
Black College Experience has covered many events including, the Black College Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement, the televised, Bayou Classic, MEAC/SWAC Challenge, Magic City Classic, Gulf Coast Challenge, HBCU Spirit of America Bowl, Tee Up Atl, National Tennis Championship, NBPA Top 50 Players from SIAC/SWAC as well as media days, career days, etc. Keisha also serves as a mentor with GladiatHers Sports.
