Semifinals Set for GCAC Basketball Tournament

Semifinals Stage Set with Three Schools' Men's and Women's Programs Vying for Chance to Play Sunday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Day Three of the GCAC 2024 Hope Credit Union Men's and Women's Basketball Championship was filled with exciting play and entertainment. The top seeds prevailed in each game, but not without a fight. Saturday's semifinals will feature both men's and women's teams from Dillard, Fisk, and Philander Smith, building the potential for another year where one school could have both teams in the finals. Fans can catch the action in person at Birthright Alumni Hall by purchasing tickets online at Tournament Central, or by watching live on HBCU+.

 

Women's Quarterfinal #3 Fisk 67, #6 Talladega 49 | BOX SCORE

Third-ranked Fisk University Lady Bulldogs immediately went to work in their first competition outshining #6 seeded Lady Tornadoes of Talladega College, 67-49. The Lady Bulldogs gave an all-around quality team effort as five players finished with double-figure scoring, Liz Gibbs, Zipporah Davis, Maya Buckhanon, Jayla Bibbs, and De'Lesia Scott. Bibbs added nine rebounds and took five steals. Arieonna Booker did it all for Dega tonight attaining 19 points, five rebounds, four steals, two assists, and one block.

 

Women's Quarterfinal #4 Dillard 80, #5 Oakwood 72 | BOX SCORE

Fifth-ranked Oakwood University's Lady Ambassadors gave their best representation but could not hold on as #4 Dillard University Lady Bleu Devils sealed their advancement through an 80-72 victory. The Lady Bleu Devils finished with four players in double-figure scoring, but the most notable performances came from Jordyn Rowe and Sydni John-Baptiste. Rowe knocked down 17 points to go along with a rebound, steal, block, and assist. Lady Ambassador Trenisha Adams notched a double-double, scoring 13 and taking down 10 rebounds, as Nekaya WIlliams and Nariah Alexander supported with 28 and 14 points, snagging five rebounds each.

 

Men's Quarterfinal #3 Talladega 67, #6 Rust 60 | BOX SCORE

It was a scrappy fight to the finish in the first men's game of the evening as third-ranked Talladega Tornadoes survived a 67-60 win over the Sixth-seeded Bearcats of Rust College. Corey Sands was responsible for a third of the Dega score, tallying 20 points, chipping in on four assists, two rebounds, and a steal. Bearcat trio, Jordin Jackson, Kalub Hunt, and Keron Bailey led the charge sinking 16, 15, and 12 points, separately, grabbing a combined 12 rebounds, and 5 steals. Jackson also dished out five assists.

 

Men's Quarterfinal - #4 Fisk 65, #5 Wiley 56 | BOX SCORE

Friday's last quarterfinal gave fans exactly what should be expected from a 4-5 matchup. From the tipoff, both teams played with great intensity, trading buckets and tough defensive plays. Just when Fisk took a five-point lead at the 12:19 mark in the first half, the Wildcats clawed their way back to take the lead 16-13 with 10:24 to play. They'd end the first half knotted at 30. The second half was no different, keeping fans on edge. The Bulldogs and Wildcats exchanged the lead nine times throughout the two periods, but it was Fisk who prevailed 65-56 in the end. Wiley was led by All-GCAC Second Teamer Delor Johnson who had 19 points and three steals. Demarius Pitts added 12 points and five rebounds while Christian Beeke had 11 boards. Fisk's All-GCAC Defensive Team and First Team honoree Jayden Lockett ended the night with a game-high 20 points and added nine rebounds. Michael Ashley led all rebounders with 12 while Blake Goodman dished a game-high four assists.
