Baseball drops finale against Talladega, still lead GCAC

TALLADEGA, Ala. - Wiley University second baseman Amir Mason homered twice, but it wasn't enough for the Wildcats, who could not overcome an early deficit in a 9-5 loss against Talladega College Sunday at Silsby Stadium.

The Wildcats (19-16, 13-2 GCAC) lost their first conference series this season and reduced their lead in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standings to 1.5 games. They drop to 8-8 on the road.

Mason's home runs came in the sixth and eighth innings, giving him three for the season. He is the second Wildcat with multiple home runs in a game this season. They didn't produce a spark. The next three batters were retired in the sixth. Talladega scored two runs to bring the margin to five. The next three batters in the eighth were retired.

For the second straight game, Wiley struck first. Eddie Garza led off the game with a walk. Jacob Perez hit a single to move Garza to second. With two outs, Ivan Del Villar hit a single into left field to drive in Garza. Isaac Burciaga held the Tornadoes scoreless in the first. The Tornadoes struck back in the second.

A double, hit batter and a triple brought home two runs. Talladega broke the game open in the third inning. Its first six batters reached and five scored, which increased the margin to six. Jalen Porter relieved Burciaga and ended the inning by retiring three of the next four hitters.

The Wildcats plated two runs in the fifth. Abel Rodriguez and Eddie Garza singled. Base hits by Ryan Ready and Jhan Carlos Javier brought them home. Mason's home run in the sixth pulled the Wildcats within three. Ready, Mason and Rodriguez each got two hits.

Wiley will visit Texas College for a doubleheader on Wednesday. It will resume GCAC play at Southern University at New Orleans on Saturday and Sunday. The Knights defeated Philander Smith University 12-2 to complete a three-game series sweep.
