Baseball out-slugs Texas College
The Wiley University baseball team hit five home runs to sweep Texas College with 10-4 and 10-5 victories Tuesday at Airport Park.
The Wildcats (8-13, 3-0 GCAC) won their fifth consecutive game and have scored double-digit runs in five straight games. They improve to 7-5 at home.
GAME 1
Wiley hit three home runs. Jhan Carlos Javier homered in his third straight game with a blast over the right-center field wall, which tied the game at one. Brendan Mendoza hit his first career home run with a shot over the center field wall, which extended the Wildcats' lead to 5-1. Kai Woodard hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning, extending the lead to nine. He also hit a double in the fourth inning.
Ryan Ready drove in two runs with a single in the fifth inning and he scored twice. Jacob Perez hit a double and scored two runs. The Wildcats stole seven bases. Eddie Garza stole three, Perez and Ready each swiped two.
Daniel Cox picked up his first win of the season, going the distance. He struck out eight and only walked one. Cox held the Steers scoreless from the second inning to the fifth inning. Mendoza helped his pitcher's cause by throwing out a runner stealing third.
GAME 2
Wiley was able to overcome four fielding errors. It jumped out to a five-run lead. Garza led off the first with a walk. He stole two bases and scored on a double by Perez. A passed ball advanced Perez to third. He scored on Ready's fly ball to right. In the second inning, Woodard and Rodriguez walked. Both runners scored on Garza's first career home run.
Texas College (0-15, 0-12 RRAC) got on the board in the second inning when Jesse Jones hit a two-run home run over the left field wall. The Wildcats answered. Ivan Del Villar led off with a single that fell in between fielders in right. Anthony Castaneda hit a double down the left field line, which scored Del Villar from first. Smauri Abram courtesy ran and scored on a sacrifice fly by Woodard, which extended the lead to five. In the bottom of the fourth, Javier hit his fourth home run of the season, bringing home Perez and Woodard.
With a 10-2 lead entering the fifth, head coach Kendrick Biggs pulled his starters except for pitcher Jaylen Cream and Castaneda. Cream threw five innings, picking up his first win. He struck out six batters. Marquis Kuykendall and Jerrius Vickers pitched the last two innings.
The Wildcats will resume Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when it begins a three-game series against Tougaloo College.
