Men's Basketball sneaks past Oakwood

Wiley University men's basketball player Delor Johnson scored 31 points to lead the Wildcats to a 73-68 victory over Oakwood University in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (10-10, 6-6 GCAC) win consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 1 and 2. They move into a tie for fourth in the conference. The victory improves Wiley to 6-5 at home.

Johnson shot 12-for-22, recording his third game with 30 or more points and 12th with 20 or more points. He also added three rebounds and three assists. Tayvion Fisher followed with 18 points off the bench. Five of his six made field goals were from 3-point territory. Fisher contributed two rebounds and two assists. Demarius Pitts led the team with 12 rebounds, marking his second double-digit rebounding game. He was a field goal short of a double-double with eight points. Jalen Bates recorded six points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Wiley led 39-36 at halftime. Johnson hit three shots in the last two minutes of the half to put the Wildcats ahead. The lead changed hands multiple times in the second half.

The Wildcats were behind 62-61 with 4:33 left. Fisher got fouled and hit the first free throw to tie the game. He missed the second but Devon Barshow rebounded it and laid it in. Barshow was fouled and converted the free throw to put Wiley ahead 65-62.

Jumpers by Johnson and Barshow extended the lead to seven. In the final minute, Oakwood fouled to attempt to extend the game. The Wildcats hit both free throws. Bates got a steal but missed the layup. Johnson got the rebound and Fisher set up Christian Beeke for the alley-oop. 

Wiley was outshot 44 to 36.1 percent but outrebounded the Ambassadors 46-33. Twenty-three came on offense which led to 18 points for the Wildcats. The turnover battle was even but Wiley outscored Oakwood 24-14 in points off turnovers.

The Wildcats will begin a three-game road trip on Thursday at the University of the Virgin Islands. The Buccaneers lost to Southern University at New Orleans 84-83.
