
Baseball opens home schedule against Sterling College
The Wiley University baseball team will play their first games at Airport Park this season when it hosts Sterling College for a three-game series Friday and Saturday.
Friday's doubleheader will start at noon. First pitch for Saturday will be 1 p.m. Live statistics will be available for all three games. Links are available in the baseball schedule on wileyathletics.com.
The Wildcats (0-3) are looking for their first win after their late-inning rally fall short in an 8-6 loss at Louisiana State University at Alexandria on Tuesday. Smauri Abram hit a two-RBI single. Kai Woodard, Julian Rosales and Orenthal Lewis had RBI base hits. On the mound, Jalen Porter struck out four in 2 1/3 innings. Nick Rodriguez threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Sterling (2-0) dominated Randall University on February 2 with 17-0 and 22-10 victories. Dustin Chartrand went 7-for-10 with a double, triple and home run. He drove in seven runs and scored six. In the second game, he threw two scoreless innings and struck out three. Andrew Mason went 4-for-6 with a home run, four runs and five RBI. David Lira pitched five scoreless innings in the first game against Randall and struck out 14 batters.
The Warriors went 20-30 last season and finished eighth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with an 11-22 record. Thirteen players return from last season's roster. Dylan Connolly is in his seventh season as head coach.
Friday will mark the sixth meeting between Wiley and Sterling. The teams last met in 2016 with the Warriors taking 5-3 and 21-3 victories. The Wildcats haven't won in the previous five meetings. They are 4-13 against schools from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Last season, Wiley went 10-10 at home.
