Lady Tiger Softball Drops Two At St. Andrews

Laurinburg, North Carolina-Despite carrying leads in both games of a doubleheader, the Edward Waters Softball team were not able to hold on to them as they fell in a road contest against St. Andrews. EWC fell 6-2 in Game One, and a heartbreaking 6-5 loss in Game Two.

Game One: St. Andrews 6, Edward Waters 2:

After a scoreless first inning, EWC was able to plate runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.

St Andrews was able to pull away for good, responding with three runs in the third inning off of two costly Edward Waters errors.

Rachel Duckworth was charged with the loss for Edward Waters in Game One. The Freshman allowed two hits and three runs over two and two-thirds innings, also recording a strikeout.

Nicole James, Brashella Keys, and Samantha Hiley led EWC at the plate, all managing one hit a piece.

St Andrews University had six hits in the game Lilly Pinto and Brennan Broadway both had multiple hits for the Knights. SAU also tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Nikki Santiago the way with three stolen bags for the Knights.

SAU's S. K. Brown took the victory for the Knights, allowing just one hit and two runs over two and two-thirds innings and striking out two. Nancy Amos threw four and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Game Two: St. Andrews 6, Edward Waters 5:

Despite starting the game out on fire, having four runs cross the plate in the top of the first inning, it was not enough as St. Andrews clawed their way back to win Game Two. 6-5.

The game was tied at five with St Andrews University batting in the bottom of the sixth when SAU's Brennan Broadway singled on a 0-1 count, scoring what proved to be the game-winning run.

Edward Waters lost despite out-hitting St Andrews University eight to four. The Lady Tigers got things moving in the first inning when Bryttani Ellis-Vance drove in one with a single.

St Andrews scored four runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught by the Knights was led by Amanda Shaffer, Broadway, Nikki Santiago, and Lexi Dawson all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Alyssa Fonda took the loss for Edward Waters, surrendering six runs on four hits over six innings.

S. K. Brown the victory on the pitcher's mound for SAU going six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one.

Edward Waters tallied eight hits in Game Two. Ellis-Vance and Fonda each racked up two hits to lead the Lady Tigers.

Broadway went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead SAU in hits.

Edward Waters fell to 3-13 on the season with the doubleheader loss and will look to get back on the winning track on Sunday, March 4th with two games against Shawnee State at 2pm and Benedictine (Kan.) at 4:30pm. Both games will be played in Titusville, Florida.
