Lady Dawgs Gets Big Effort in Rout of the Virgin Islands
Maya Buckhanon, A’Niya Young and Jayla Bibbs grab double-digit rebounds to pace Fisk in 69-39 rebounding advantage.
NASHVILLE – The Fisk Lady Bulldog 2022 recruiting class was one of the top classes in the nation. They were nicknamed the "Notorious Nine". Four of those players are still on the roster, and they all contributed as the Lady Bulldogs (14-7, 11-2 GCAC) defeated the University of the Virgin Islands Lady Buccaneers (1-15, 1-11 GCAC) 80-40 in Gulf Coast Conference play from Nashville.
One of the 2022 class holdovers, A'Niya Young, led all scorers with 16 points. She grabbed 12 rebounds to record her third double-double on the season. Maya Buckhanon chipped in 14 points and had 14 rebounds. 2022 recruiting class member Laila Eliotti had 12 points off the bench, all coming on 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc. Liz Gibbs grabbed ten rebounds.
Lately, teams have been focusing on the 2023 NAIA All American Buckhanon. The combination of bench "Notorious Nine" members De'Lesia Scott and Mya Robinson have picked up the slack in the paint. Last night, the two combined for 11 points and 14 rebounds. Their effort helped Fisk to a 69-39 advantage in rebounds.
With the conference tournament starting at the end of the month, the Lady Dawgs are beginning to hit their stride. The new and old players working together, will be evaluated the rest of the way.
"We inherited some good talent, and we brought some in," said Fisk Head Coach Victoria Crawford. "We finally have everyone available so now we have to figure who wants it more. Tonight was a chance for some players to get some minutes. I liked what I saw for the most part."
The Lady Dawgs will finish their homestand with a game against Talladega College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
