Thompson, Lockett Lead Bulldogs to Homecoming Victory
Cincinnati native Tyon Thompson scored 22 points, including the game-winning basket with 5.7 seconds left to give Fisk their first win of the season.
NASHVILLE-- Thompson, Lockett, and Associates sounds like a good name for a law firm. For Fisk University head men's basketball coach Kenny Anderson, their names sound like music to his ears. The two wings both had a big night to fuel an 85-83 Homecoming win over Wilberforce Univerisity. Tyon Thompson led the team with 22 points, none bigger than his driving layup with 5.7 seconds left in regulation to break an 83-all tie. Jayden Lockett registered a triple-double with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and ten assists. On the defensive end, four steals and three blocks. Lockett's efforts in rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks were all game-highs.
The Bulldogs controlled the lead for most of the game. A three-point basket by Lockett on an assist from Thompson gave Fisk a 51-36 lead, which was their largest for the day. Wilberforce chipped away and finally got to within one at 65-64. WU went on a 10-2 run to grab the lead at 74-67. After Fisk cut the lead to three, Kyle Cardenas went on a 5-0 run of his own to build WU's lead to eight. Cincinnati native Allen Powell (14 points) scored Fisk's next seven points to keep the game close. Free throws by Michael Ashley (11 points) and Lockett tied the score at 81. Thompson then scored Fisk's 83rd and 85th points on assists from Lockett to give the Bulldogs the win. Despite Fisk going 8-of-10 from the charity stripe down the stretch, they missed 22 free throws for the game.
"When we get those two going, we are pretty tough," said Anderson of Lockett and Thompson. "Tyon told me that he wanted the ball at the end. Wilberforce is in Cincinnati, and that is where he is from. He had a chip on his shoulder. So did AP (Powell). I told you that we have some scorers. A few other guys contributed as well. We had four guys in double figures and probably could have had more if we hit our free throws. These guys owe me at practice. That won't happen again, I promise."
The Bulldogs have three games away from Nashville this week, with their first coming against Austin Peay State University on Tuesday.
