Bulldogs Suffers Tough Double Overtime Loss to Philander Smith
Up by 18 at the half, Fisk then gets cold, scoring 16 more points before overtime.
NASHVILLE – For the second time this season, the Fisk University Bulldogs held an early lead, then lost in overtime, this time to the Philander Smith University Panthers 78-68, in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action from Nashville.
Before the game started, there was an hour and twelve-minute delay due to a tornado warning in the Nashville area. Fisk played well in the first half, outscoring PSU 40-22 on the strength of 14 points from Jayden Lockett and 11 points from Tyon Thompson.
The Bulldogs came out flat in the second half as the physical Panthers made it tough to get any points in the paint, and the toll was harsh on Fisk as centers Tyree Martin and Soloman Mustafa-Reid, and Thompson found themselves in foul trouble. Lockett and Thompson also were injured during the second half but finished.
The Panthers clawed themselves back in the game, outscoring Fisk 34-16, tying the score on a basket by Nashville native Derrick Woods with 0.3 left. Woods, a Stratford High School alum, scored 18 points in the contest. After an even first overtime, PSU outscored Fisk 16-6 to take the win.
"We have done this twice now against GCAC teams at home," said Fisk Head Coach Kenny Anderson. "We let Rust off the hook, and they beat us, but this one hurt more. We must learn how to finish. We have played well in spurts all season but must find a way to lose."
Lockett led all scorers with 22 points. The two-way player also had six rebounds, six assists, and seven steals. Michael Ashley had 16 points and 11 boards. Thompson added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
